The roughly 450-year-old bridge connects Switzerland with Bad Säckingen in Germany. In the past, the border ran along the deepest point of the Rhine, which constantly shifted with the course of the river. To simplify the border line, it was moved to the middle of the river, which shifted the border by 8.2 metres. As a result, Switzerland became 8.2 metres smaller at this spot and Germany correspondingly larger. Today the border runs about 110 metres away from the bridge.
