The Ballenberg is Switzerland's only open-air museum and comprises more than 100 historic buildings from various regions of the country, including the canton of Ticino with a farming estate. Visitors can watch bread being baked, sausages being smoked, flour being ground in two mills, pottery making, wood carving, shingle making and a genuine silk production with silkworms. The museum also offers a playground, a new raised plateau with views over the houses, a petting zoo with more than 200 farm animals as well as manual wheelchairs and electric vehicles for hire. The Ballenbergbahn and a horse-drawn carriage run through the park several times a day, and there are three restaurants on site. The rope works is regarded as the longest building at the Ballenberg.
