The Schinznacher Baumschulbahn is one of the most unusual railway experiences in Switzerland. In the middle of the grounds of the Zulauf tree nursery in Schinznach-Dorf runs Switzerland's only regularly operated steam railway with a track gauge of just 600 mm. The nostalgic steam and diesel trains wind their way along a circular route of around three kilometres through the park-like nursery landscape, delighting young and old alike.
The railway was originally built in 1928 to transport trees, soil and material within the nursery. After decades out of service, it was rebuilt for the nursery's 100th anniversary and developed into a popular excursion destination. Today, historic locomotives from various countries are in operation, including machines from Germany, South Africa and Spain. Railway fans can experience genuine steam locomotive nostalgia here.
In addition to the train ride, a cosy nursery café, barbecue spots, picnic areas and a playground invite visitors to linger. Particularly fascinating are the numerous historic locomotives and carriages on display on the grounds. The ride lasts around 25 minutes and is an ideal destination for families, grandparents with grandchildren and railway enthusiasts.
