The journey begins in Chur at 592 metres and leads in around four hours up to over 2200 metres and down to Tirano. From Thusis onwards begins the UNESCO World Heritage section, 122 kilometres long, with 55 tunnels and 196 bridges. Highlights include the Landwasser Viaduct as well as the spiral tunnels between Bergün and Preda, which help the train gain altitude. The route continues through the Engadin with views of the meltwater outflow of the Morteratsch Glacier, before crossing the Bernina Pass towards Alp Grüm.
