Chäs und Brot is a small settlement near the hamlet of Oberbottigen close to Bern. The name dates back to the year 1339, when soldiers were supplied here with cheese and bread by the local inhabitants. According to legend, the Swiss cross also originated here, when a woman attached linen cloths crosswise to the soldiers' chests in order to distinguish them from the enemy. On site there is a cheese dairy selling milk, cheese and butter. Nearby lies the Wursthügel, where the higher-ranking officers were once supplied with sausage.
