A German railway station on Swiss soil

The Basel Badischer Bahnhof is a special feature of the European rail network. Although the station lies on Swiss territory, it is operated by Deutsche Bahn and is partly regarded as German territory under customs law. This is based on international treaties between Switzerland and Germany dating from the early 20th century.

The station serves as an important transport hub for travellers between Switzerland, Germany and other European countries. Long-distance, regional and S-Bahn trains run here every day. Many visitors find it surprising that they are in Basel while at the same time using a station operated under German railway law. This unique constellation makes the Badischer Bahnhof a special place with a cross-border history.
