The Elefantenbachweg is one of the most beautiful hidden nature experiences within the city of Zurich. The idyllic hike leads through the wildly romantic Stöckentobel gorge and along the Elefantenbach, a small stream that winds its way through a surprisingly unspoilt gorge landscape. It is hard to believe that the city centre is only a few minutes away.
The highlight of the hike is the famous stone elephant, which stands in the middle of the stream bed and squirts water from its trunk. The sculpture was erected back in 1898 and is still a popular destination for families and photographers today. Right next to it there are seating areas and a fireplace inviting visitors to take a relaxing break.
The path leads through shady forests, over small bridges and along natural stretches of the stream. On warm summer days in particular, the Elefantenbach is a popular place for splashing about and cooling off. The easy circular hike is ideally suited to families with children and offers a surprisingly wild natural setting in the middle of Zurich.
