Schwanau Island lies just 125 metres from the mainland, yet it can only be reached by ferry, which runs on call and costs 2 francs per trip. The island is about the size of 14 basketball courts and is home to rare animal species such as smooth snakes and grass snakes. On the island there is an inn with a restaurant as well as a chapel where a hermit once lived, which is why parties and noise are prohibited there. The castle ruin on the island was built around 1200 and burned down as early as around 1300. Due to nature conservation regulations, the marked paths may not be left, and the restaurant closes at 10 p.m. because of cantonal emission requirements.
