Juf lies at 2126 metres above sea level in the canton of Graubünden and is regarded as the highest village in Switzerland and in Europe. The remote village has around 30 inhabitants and has neither police, nor a doctor, nor a cinema. As Juf lies above the tree line, no trees may be felled there, which is why the residents use blocks pressed from sheep dung, known as "Bletscha", as fuel. From Andeer, the nearest larger village more than 30 kilometres away, a narrow, steep pass road leads to Juf, which is also served eight times a day by a bus.
