At its narrowest point, the Pfeffergässlein in Basel is only 1.10 metres wide and is considered the narrowest street in Switzerland. Such narrow alleys were common in the Middle Ages and were meant to be wide enough for a pig to turn around in. Right next to the Pfeffergässlein lies the Pfefferplätzlein, which is presumably regarded as the smallest square in Switzerland. Compared with the narrowest street in the world, the Spreuerhofstrasse in Reutlingen at 31 cm wide, the Pfeffergässlein is nevertheless considerably wider.
