The Schanzengraben is one of the most beautiful hidden oases in the middle of Zurich and is affectionately called the "little canal of Zurich" by many locals. The roughly two-kilometre-long promenade connects Lake Zurich at Bürkliplatz with the main station and follows a historic moat that was originally part of the baroque city fortifications. Today it has become an idyllic walking path that offers a surprising amount of calm right in the city centre.
In places the path runs several metres below street level and leads over wooden walkways, sandstone paths and small bridges along the water. Along the way you pass the Alter Botanischer Garten, historic walls, the striking water tower and the famous Männerbad Schanzengraben men's bathhouse. Especially in spring and summer, numerous benches and shady spots invite you to linger.
The Schanzengraben is perfect for a romantic stroll, a lunch break by the water or as an insider tip for a free date in Zurich. Despite its central location, the atmosphere here is astonishingly relaxed. Anyone who wants to get to know a different side of Zurich should definitely visit this place.
