The Tellsplatte lies on Lake Uri, a part of Lake Lucerne, and is the setting of the legend of William Tell. According to the legend, Tell was freed here by the bailiff Gessler during a fierce foehn storm so that he could steer the boat. Previously, on Gessler's orders, Tell had been forced to shoot an apple off his son's head. The site commemorates this well-known Swiss folk legend.
