The lowest point in Switzerland lies on Lake Maggiore near the Swiss-Italian border at Valmara. The elevation is about 193 metres above sea level, whereby the spot at the mouth of the Valmara river lies, due to the geographical conditions, even slightly lower than the rest of the lake's surface level. The place can be reached from Locarno by bus line 316 to the terminus in Brissago; from there a footpath leads along the shore of Lake Maggiore to Valmara. A marking on a bridge indicates this lowest point.
